Connecticut Criminal Defense Firm
Ruane Attorneys is a boutique criminal defense firm in Connecticut that divides its concentration into 4 distinct areas. By concentrating practice groups into 4 areas, the lawyers and staff of Ruane Attorneys can truly offer a dedicated defense for you or your loved one. Unlike many lawyers who practice a little bit of criminal law, a little bit of personal injury law and a little bit of whatever else walks through the door, when you have Ruane Attorneys on your side, you know you have a fulltime criminal defense attorney focusing only on one thing – your defense.
The anchor of our practice is our DUI Defense practice, which is led by Connecticut DUI defense pioneer Jay Ruane. Included in this team is Jim Olayos, an attorney and retired DMV hearing officer. Ruane Attorneys has the only DUI defense group with a retired hearing officer on staff. The DUI defense group prides itself on knowing both the science and the law and using every angle to defend a DUI case, anywhere in the state.
Drug Possession Defense
The Drug Possession Defense group of Ruane Attorneys is under the supervision of Jim Ruane. Attorney Ruane has been a certified criminal trial specialist since 1985 and uses his experience in suppression hearings and trials to contest drug possession cases statewide. Also part of this group is retired Westport detective Michael Barrett, who has been trained in search and seizure law and knows how the police can cut corners in an investigation. By utilizing the knowledge of a former police officer in your defense case, the drug defense division of Ruane Attorneys is able to find defenses not readily apparent at first.
Domestic Violence Defense
Attorney James Ruane leads the Domestic Violence Defense division of Ruane Attorneys. Recent high profile domestic violence cases have caused the State’s Attorneys to devote extra resources to Family violence cases, and Attorney Barrett is available to be in court with new clients the very next day, when the arraignment court imposes protective orders. The law allows a person to have a hearing on the issuance of these orders which can keep a client out of their home and away from their family – but you can waive the hearing if you do not act fast enough.
Finally, Ruane Attorneys has a Juvenile Defense Division. Currently, anyone charged with a criminal offense 16 and under must appear in a special juvenile court. The rules of these courts are different, and juveniles are not entitled to jury trials. By knowing the way these courts work, we are able to negotiate for the proper result for your child. We also have a concentration in the 17 year old clients who are called “Youthful Offenders” and have special treatment in the adult courts.
