4th of July weekend is an exciting and fun time for many. With all of the excitement and fun with family and friends it is easy to get a little carried away. If you happen to find yourself in an unfortunate situation which leads to your arrest, don’t panic! Read on to see what to do next.
Procedures After Arrest:
- Once you arrive at the station, your booking process will take place. This is when the police take your fingerprints and a photograph of you for their records. Also, they take basic information about you such as your address and phone number.
- After your booking takes place, the police (in most jurisdictions) will allow you a phone call in which most people choose to contact a family member or a lawyer to arrange for bail.
- Bail may be paid in cash or cash equivalent.
- You have the right to a speedy trial, which means that once the police turn over whatever evidence they have to the prosecutor, they have a 72-hour limit on stating what they intend to charge you with. (These charges are subject to change as the investigation continues on and more evidence is gathered).
- If you are released on bail or bond (a promise to pay bail in full amount) be sure to stay in contact with your lawyer.

- If you were detained and not booked, there are likely no charges against you which means you are free to go and should be released from police custody in a timely matter.
- If you feel as though you were held unjustly, or for too long, your lawyer may attain a writ of habeas corpus to ensure that you are brought before a judge to determine if you are being legally held.
