On another page, I talked about summer activities that you can do with your elderly loved one. Some of these activities could be done in the home. Some of them could be done outside of the home. But, the last article talked about ways that you can bond with your elderly loved one in the summer. This article also talks about summer activities. But, it talks about activities that your loved one can do in the nursing home with other residents. If your loved one’s nursing home does not have these activities, you could suggest them for some summer fun!
Outdoor Clubs
Your loved one’s nursing home should take advantage of the nice weather by creating opportunities for residents to get together outdoors. This can be done through the creation of various clubs related to outdoor activities. Maybe the nursing home can start a gardening club. Produce can then be used in a cooking club to feed the nursing home. Or, a yoga club can be started to get residents outdoors and moving during the day. Other opportunities include an outdoor cards or board game club, a lawn game club, a nature painting class, and more.
Outdoor Time
There can also be unscheduled outdoor time for the residents. They can partake in activities and hobbies that interest them while getting active outside. Even if it is just reading a book or playing a board game outdoors, this can provide a change of scenery and improve residents’ moods.
Artistic Opportunities
Having outdoor concerts, plays, movies, and similar events can build a great sense of community. Whether the residents put on these events or are just in the audience, this could be a good opportunity to enjoy time outdoors.
Educational Opportunities
You can host educational seminars outdoors related to summer health. Good topics might include staying hydrated in the summer, learning about summer fruits and vegetables, and more.
Suggesting activities such as these can help break up the monotony of day to day routine. Taking advantage of the summer weather is a great way to improve your loved one’s physical and emotional well being. You can share your own tips for summer nursing home activities with us on Facebook.
