What Is Your Dream Job?
Choosing a major for many people means choosing the field that they want to work in. Do you have a dream job? Do you have a field that you know you want to work in? If so, these factors could go into determining your major. For example, if you know that you want to be an engineer, you probably want to major in engineering. If you want to be a teacher, you will need experience in education.
Economic Factors
Some people, though, don’t necessarily have a dream job or know what they want to do professionally. If this is the case, it can be difficult to determine what you want your major to be. Another factor to consider if you are not sure what major to choose is economics. How important is making money to you? Is that a major motivator in getting a job, or are you more interested in factors such as work/life balance, flexibility, and passion? There is no right or wrong answer – just what is important to you. If you are interested in a job that will have high earning power, you might want to study things like engineering, computer science, finance, etc.
What is Your Passion?
Even if you don’t have a dream job picked out, you can determine what you would like to study and ultimately what job you would like to have considering your passions and strengths. Are you creative? Good with numbers? Good at problem solving? List out your best traits and the hobbies/issues that you are passionate about. You can use this list to find a job that highlights your interests. Ultimately, this can help you work backwards and determine what you want to study in school.
Your Fresh Start
If you want to go back to school, the world is your oyster! If you are not sure what you want to study, choose a college with a wide range of options. Usually, liberal arts colleges offer many different types of majors and will give you some time to determine what you want to study. However, if possible, try to decide on your major as soon as possible. This can help you find the right school and program for you.
