While Halloween is oftentimes marketed toward children, it is no longer a holiday that only excites and inspires kids. Many adults also partake in Halloween activities, whether that means escorting their children while they go trick-or-treating, or attending fun Halloween parties with families and friends. However, a run-in with the law can put a damper on any of these festivities. As you may know after reading our blog for a while, the police are actually more likely to be out looking for people disobeying the law on holidays than on regular days of the year. This is because celebrations can lead to excessive alcohol intake, illegal drug use, and other criminal acts. To keep yourself out of trouble this Halloween, follow these tips.
Have a Plan
If you are going to a friend’s Halloween party, you should establish a plan beforehand. Determine how you will get home. Consider, will you take a cab, will you have a designated sober driver, or are you the designated driver? Also determine beforehand how much you will have to drink. This will prevent you from becoming too intoxicated to drive or to make other decisions. Sticking to a plan can prevent you from getting involved with illegal activity, such as driving under the influence, taking drugs, getting into fights, or doing other things that you wouldn’t normally do.
If your plan breaks down during the night, that is ok. We can’t plan for every scenario that might arise. However, it is important that if you realize that you cannot get yourself home on your own, you find a safe way to get home. You can call a taxi or ask a friend if you can stay over their house. These are good alternatives to risking a DUI arrest by getting in the car when you shouldn’t.
Avoid Altercations
If you are going to a party where you will run into someone that you have a problem with, you need to think of how you will handle this situation. Having too much to drink and starting a fight will not be a good idea. You or the other person might get seriously hurt, and the cops might get involved. Alternatively, if you are out at a bar or a party and there is an altercation with a stranger, it is in your best interest to walk away before the issue escalates. The last thing that you want at this time is to be arrested for assault.
Host a Party
If you are worried about issues that you or your friends might have with the law, you can try to control the situation by throwing a party. Encourage your friends to sleep over your house so that no one ends up drinking and driving.
These are just a few ways that you can keep yourself and your friends safe on Halloween. While having a good time might be a priority, making sure that everyone is safe is also important. If you do have a run-in with the law this Halloween, it is a good idea to contact an attorney.
